Typically a plant of dry, sandy grasslands and pine plains. It also occurs in fens and other calcareous soils. Very drought tolerant. This species is not native to the counties of SW Michigan, but occurs in the northern half of the LP, SE Michigan, and northern Indiana.
You will often find this species referred to as Aster ptarmicoides, due to its close resemblance to an aster. It is not an Aster, but a Goldenrod and there are documented cases of it hybridizing with other Goldenrods.
